Coprophagia Can Be Fatal

The majority of dog owners will tell you; Dogs love eating feces. Throughout a regular day your dog may have many opportunities to consume this harmful matter. While we just find the idea revolting, dogs will crave and actively search out animal feces. Pet experts claim, the dog actually like the taste. Other experts say its a combination of taste and vitamin deficiency. Feces can have a high concentration of protein, but it also has internal parasites, organisms such as Toxoplasma gondii is transmitted in some cat feces. This can cause a dog a variety of problems, including Central Nervous System and Muscle damage.

Out in the park, on nature hikes through the forest, long walks through the neighbourhood, even in your own back yard, your dog can find other animals feces. Almost everywhere you would take your dog, there is a danger of them consuming harmful parasites. While it is impossible to protect your dog every minute of the day; it is important to discourage the practise when ever possible.

Dogs can experience mild symptoms, like tiredness, lack of appetite, fever and even vomiting, when they have consumed even a moderate amount of feces. These symptoms are many times overlooked because it is difficult for the dog owner to diagnose, but many times, when your dog is not himself; chances are he has been exposed to feces parasites. In general, small doses of these consumed parasites are not usually manifested into anything more than a listliss dog. No appetite and no energy. Usually these symptoms will pass after a day or so. Similar to you having a cold.

The more serious hazard is present when pet owners have dogs and cats co-habitating in the same home. This offers your dog a buffet of snacks that is readily available. Dogs that consume cat litter from a litter pan are at high risk of serious internal damage and possibly even death. Cat litter contains some toxic ingredients, that when exposed to the inside of your dogs stomach, will harden and cause blockages. Many dogs have lost there lives from intestinal blockage.

It is recommended that a hooded litter box, like the LitterHouse cat litter box, be used in homes with cats and dogs. This type of litter box restricts the dog access to the litter pan and your worry of fatal intestinal blockage is eliminated.
